Architecture Studio I

This module is an introduction to architectural design. It is themed 'body and space' and aims to introduce students design through expressions of body in designed spaces. Students are to learn by understanding design processes and understanding basic design elements and principles. This module is a 5 hour module conducted in a period of 14 weeks.
Project 1: Self-Expression through Object: 'Representing Me'

This first project introduces students understanding on design processes and ways to generate ideas. Students were required to design an object that reflects one's own personality or physical attributes. We had to understand ourselves and how we can reflect those attributes in an abstract form. As a design process, mock up models were created to experiment on form, ideas and sketches were drawn and recorded.

The object I created is inspired by a kaleidoscope that represents my inner self. It has a play with light as the viewer will experience different light patterns looking into the object. In creation of this design, I had understood myself better and had learned to express myself through design.

Project 2: Life Capsule

This project required students to design a life capsule (a confined space which house multi-functional furniture that  the user can use for different activities and purposes). In groups, students were tasked to choose a group member as their client, give him/her an occupation and design and build a life capsule for that client.

As the life capsule is created as a life sized model out of cardboard, we had to discover that client's body dimensions, and the needs and desires of the client. The client we chose was Kayla because of her small body figure and she was a on-site reporter.

Below are the life-sized cardboard life capsule and concept boards.

Project 3a: Story telling and Narrative 'My Building, My Architecture'

1st part of a 2 part project, Project 3a required students to make a video about the design, purpose and features of a building. In our same project 2 groups, we chose a retail shopping mall called 'Publika' located in Mont Kiara. In this project, we had to research about the building's history, architect, why and how it is designed and built. After that, we visited the shopping mall to film the experience the building. We chose this building because of its interesting features as it is a shopping mall that encourages people to express art and it is a great place to promote art.

Below is our documentary about Publika

Project 3b: 'A Hide Out' A dreamspace for a user

Project 3b required students to design a hideout attached between two buildings for a famous client. Students are to use basic design elements and principle and create a storyline and narrative on one's design.

The client I chose is a famous surrealist painter by the name of Salvador Dali. I chose him because of his eccentric and unusual personality. In this project, I had to use everything I had learned from the previous projects. I had to know Dali as much as I can and reflect his attributes through my design in an abstract form. The hideout I had designed reflects on his eccentric personality and his surrealistic work. Also, I also had to input the needs and desires of Dali (much like what I did in Project 2) such as, a studio where he can work, and a library as he likes to read.

This module had taught me the fundamental basics of design elements, design principles, how to generate ideas through design processes and experiences in model making. I learned how to think deeper for my designs with the help of my tutor and how to create something using basic design elements and principles.
