PROJECT 1- PRELIMINARY STUDIES

The preliminary studies project is an assignment that requires students to investigate on the basic notions of an urban city, by learning examples of other urban infill projects all around the world. Students are tasked to design a community library in a given site. Knowing this, we were to conduct studies on community libraries and its effect towards the surrounding community.

The project comprises of 3 components: Site documentation, Site analysis and Precedent studies of Urban infills and community libraries. Below are the works conducted by my groupmates and I on the urban study and site analysis of our given site- Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

PROJECT 2 - FINAL PROJECT

Here, students are to focus on the design of the community library. Betlow is a statement of my design and the process of my implementation of my interpretation of the site.

By definition, a library is a building containing a collection of books whereby people can read and borrow. It is also a place where people can gather for discussion or a casual meet-up and to learn. The purpose of this library is to act as a learning center by bringing the community together in a place and encourage visitors to learn about Jalan TAR by reflecting on the character of the street into the library and through interaction with the community. Perhaps the use of views, interstitial spaces and unique functions can encourage people to share new insights with each other. Also, the library intends to stimulate interaction between the local community and the visitors of Jalan TAR.

Jalan TAR has a unique character as a ‘textile street’ where clothes and fabric are sold in majority of the shops there. There are also a variety of colors seen in the textile stores. These are elements of what makes Jalan TAR a unique and vibrant street. The library attracts the local community by freeing its ground plane and creating functions such as sewing workshops that is beneficial to the community. This colorful element unique to Jalan TAR can be reflected in the design of the library. Perhaps with an understanding on color psychology and the implementation on this element onto the function of each floor can stimulate an emotion that can be felt while experiencing the street itself.

Using colors onto floors.

Void is implemented and verticality element is created.

Besides, the sense of verticality, or the attraction for users to look upwards (especially from the ground floor) is involved in the design concept of the library. To do this, a void is created in the section of the library in a form of steps. This in turn also creates unique views between the two massing. By using this sense of verticality from the ground floor, it encourages users to ‘explore’ the library and its color-coded floors and functions while having that ‘textile street’ environment embedded with its circulation.
