Architecture Studio III

This studio emphasizes on the poetics of place and the experiential qualities of space in architecture. In the subject, students are introduced to, firstly, an exploration of spatial typologies and poetics in architecture; and secondly, the concept of neighborhood and community. In their preliminary design work, students engage with literature studies and interpretation as well as translating into design of different spatial typologies (i.e. linear, spiral, spine, centric, etc) which explore the idea of architectural tectonics and experiences. - Taken from Module Outline of Architecture studio III

Project 1 - Journey of the 5 Senses

PROJECT 1A - PRECEDENT STUDIES: Analysing spatial poetics & spatial typologies in architecture

Project 1a requires students to identify and analyze spatial order and spatial poetics through precedent studies. 2 precedents are to be selected for study. One precedent must be from the pre-modern movement and the other must be comtemporary. Next, one precedent must also be Linear and the other must be concentric.

The linear building that we chose to study was the Baker House by architect Alvar Aalto. Villa Rotonda by architect Andrea Palladio was chosen as the concentric precedent.

The analysis of our precedent studies must be presented in 2 A3 sized boards.

PROJECT 1B - ‘Journey for the 5 senses’ POETIC ARCHITECTURE

In groups of 5, students were required to propose two schemes for a 'Walkway Space" with the theme 'Journey of the 5 senses'. We were to design the two proposals with two different and contrasting spatial types which are: Concentric and Linear according to literatures in a form of lyric, poem or short story. Theres is no specific site given to us.

The literature my group and I chose were a short story, Anastasia, written by Italo Calvino and a song called One written by the band U2,

Contents are to be presented in 4 A3 sized panels.

Project 2- GENIUS LOCI: Site Analysis & Concept Development

In the same group as project 1, students are to conduct site analysis of the physical context within the identified MACRO & MICRO sites. Sites are located in Bukit Cina, Melaka and in the urban center of Melaka.

Each group are then required to produce a 7-9 minutes site analysis video about the sites.

Individually, Each student will be asked to pin up and present their design process using butter paper. The interim submission will guide and assesses students on the schematic design phase. Students must show how their conceptual ideas / design strategy and its development into a design scheme works and how it is responsive to the context. Students must also show how the design has been developed into an “Experiential space” taking into account the considerations of users, context, function and experience.

The site i had chosen for my Visitor Interpretive Centre is located at the urban area of Melaka. We  were also required to convey our own site analysis and conceptual ideas through A2 sized panels.

Project 3- GENIUS LOCI: VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE (VIC)

In this final project, we were required to design a visitor interpretive centre in relations to the site. In the process of this, we were to  Propose a design scheme which response to the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), functional program and users’ experiences and generate design through conscious consideration of human scale, natural light, materials/texture (User experience).

We were to convey our design through 4 A1 sized presentation boards with the following requirements:

- A brief written explanation explaining the thinking behind the scheme

- Site Plan 1:500

- Plan(s), Section(s), Elevation(s) which includes relevant site context at a MINIMUM of 1:150 scale.  EMPHASIS should be given to an EXTENDED site section showing the building in its extended context.

- One photomontage of the architecture within the site context

- One key 3D image of the interior space of the building to illustrate the poetry of your space

- A set of set response diagrams that illustrate your design strategy informed by the context

- A set of diagrams which clearly demonstrate the spatial typology explored, the circulation, the relationship between inside/outside, views and other points which are appropriate to your design project.

- Precedent studies that informed the design project

- Integration (graphical information) with Building Science 1 illustrating your design response to the climatic aspects of the site
