Work In Progress

The typology that was given to my site was to design an "activity centre". To me, an activity centre could be interpreted with various functions.

Through a comprehensive site analysis conducted and taking note of the surrounding context, I decided to lean towards to a more "cultural" activity centre. I had decided to design an activity centre that promotes traditional arts and games.

BUBBLE DIAGRAM EXPERIMENTATION

An experiment on how spaces can respond to its context.

PRECEDENT STUDIES

Here i studied how spaces from other buildings respond to each other and its hierarchy of space.

Process model playing on spaces.

Questions were asked such as: What if the plaza is raised to the 1st floor?

What if spaces are exposed towards pedestrian circulation?

WEEK 2

Further experiementation of spaces and design exploration was further conducted. I used bubble diagrams to explore how the context could be part of the spaces. Could pedestrian or vehicular circulation be brought into the building? Perhaps park users could be attracted though visual response by exposing activities.

Here, I had established that my main programs would be the kite-making workshop and outdoor activity space, gasing-making workshop and its outdoor playing field and the silat outdoor and indoor training spaces.

DESIGN EXPLORATION

Here i used massing models to explore how programs could respond to its surroundings.

WEEK 3 - PROJECT 1B SILENT PRESENTATION

Below are my submissions for this presentation.

DESIGN BRIEF

Malaysia’s cultural activities and craft is a dying art in the present day. Diminishing groups of cultural craftsman in Malaysia are afraid of the extinction of traditional arts. That being said, local authorities have taken initiatives to sustain the country’s tradition in Kuala Lumpur. Titiwangsa accommodates a number of buildings that promotes the local traditions. For example, Istana Budaya functions as a cultural performing arts theatre and the National Art Gallery aims to promote local art.

Taman Tasik Titiwangsa is an urban park located beside the bustling Jalan Tun Razak in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Located around the park are the National Library, National Art Gallery, Istana Budaya and Sutra Dance Theatre. This park serves as a recreational park for the public. It contains a large lake in its middle that reflects a beautiful view of the city center. The urban park partly functions to support the city center through its views by providing its users new appreciation of Kuala Lumpur in a different perspective.

The Cultural Activity Centre located at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa functions to promote Malaysia’s traditional arts and games. It aims to connect the community, both young and old, by teaching them the crafting process and playing methods of the various traditional arts and games. The activity centre mainly promotes the making of Wau Bulan, the playing techniques of Gasing and the martial art form of Silat. Together with the neighboring cultural buildings, is there a possibility that a cultural activity centre situated in an urban park be able to reignite the fading traditional art and games of Malaysia?
